Our people
In conjunction with the University of Sydney, we support almost 100 Honors, Masters and PhD students, and many of our senior staff hold conjoint appointments with the University. We are closely affiliated with the Westmead Hospital and many of our research leaders are clinicians within the hospital.
The culture at Westmead Institute
We have a highly collaborative and collegial culture. Together, we strive towards research excellence. We are committed to creating and supporting an equitable and inclusive working environment for our staff. All staff are treated with respect and encouraged to fulfil their potential regardless of race, gender, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, or physical disability.
How we support you
We offer an employee assistance program which includes voluntary and confidential counselling services to employees, at no cost.
Continuing your education
Staff are encouraged to attend a range of presentations where Westmead Institute postdocs, PhD students and invited national and international speakers present their research findings. We encourage our researchers to attend conferences to present and keep up with current and emerging research in their field.
Social activities
We recognise it is important for staff to get together not only for formal collaborations, but to enjoy social events and Institute successes. We have representatives from all areas of the Institute that help co-ordinate and plan many of our staff social activities including our regular BBQs, special events and Christmas Party.
Salary packaging and flexible conditions
As a not-for-profit health promotion charity, we are able to provide employees with the opportunity to salary package, allowing them to take a portion of their remuneration in the form of tax exempt fringe benefits. We also offer superannuation packaging arrangements, and flexible working conditions.
Our environmental commitment
At the Westmead Institute, we have a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. For example, our building features many ecologically sustainable design elements including:
- 330 solar panels
- passive thermal control via thermal glass
- movement activated general lighting
- recycling waste streams
- water saving devices fitted on general use taps
- rainwater re-use system
