Bringing a Cure for Hepatitis B Closer
A/Prof Thomas Tu is developing a new RNA-based therapy that could help cure chronic hepatitis B. Current treatments can suppress the virus, but they do not remove the small number of infected liver cells that allow it to persist. Thomas’s work aims to target and eliminate these “reservoir cells”, one of the biggest barriers to a cure.
More than 205,000 Australians and around 300 million people worldwide live with hepatitis B. The infection can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer, with serious complications contributing to deaths in up to one quarter of those affected.
By testing this approach in advanced preclinical models, Thomas and his team hope to move the research closer to clinical trials. A successful therapy could shift hepatitis B from a lifelong condition to one that can be eliminated, reducing the risk of liver disease, cancer and transmission.
