The Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Michael Rose AM as the incoming Chair of the Board of Directors.
A highly respected non-executive director, Mr Rose has extensive experience across corporate, government, arts, and not-for-profit boards in Australia and internationally.
Mr Rose currently serves as President of the Art Gallery of NSW Trust, Chair of the Committee for Sydney, Greater Sydney Parklands and NRT Group, and is Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia. His other board roles include positions with Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Ltd, Warren and Mahoney Limited, and WIMR where he has served for six years as Board Member and Chair of the Human Resources Committee.
Mr Rose spent more than three decades as a lawyer with the firm Allens, including nine years as Chief Executive Partner. In recognition of his contributions to Indigenous communities and the legal profession, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2016.

Of his appointment, Mr Rose said, “I am honoured to take on the role of Chair at WIMR. WIMR is uniquely positioned in the heart of Western Sydney, where its strong ties with the Local Health District enable it to serve our diverse local communities while driving research that has global impact.

Departing Chair, Mr Philip Chronican leaves behind an enduring legacy, having guided WIMR through a period of significant growth and change
WIMR Executive Director, Professor Philip O’Connell said, “Throughout his tenure, Philip Chronican has brought outstanding corporate experience to the organisation. He led the successful transformation of WIMR’s financial position, including establishing the WIMR Foundation to ensure sustainable funding. He encouraged a culture of innovation through research commercialisation. More importantly he has shown a strong and enduring commitment to WIMR’s mission of translating research into better outcomes for patients.”

Professor O’Connell welcomes the appointment of Micheal Rose as Chair of the WIMR Board of Directors and looks forward to working together to lead WIMR into it its next phase of research innovation and patient impact.
Professor O’Connell added, “Mr Rose’s leadership experience and commitment to public and community service will help guide WIMR’s vital work, driving breakthroughs in precision medicine and delivering innovative approaches spanning gene and cell therapies, phage and plasmid therapies, regenerative medicine, and functional and immuno-genomics.”
The appointment took effect 1 January 2025.
