WIMR becomes latest Australian signatory to join the Technician Commitment

The Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR) has joined the Technician Commitment, which ensures visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in research.

WIMR employs more than 450 highly skilled research professionals, including scientists, clinician‑researchers, technical specialists, professional staff and research students. These teams play a critical role in driving impactful research across cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune and neurological disorders, metabolic and cardiovascular disease, ensuring discoveries can be rapidly translated into improved patient care through WIMR’s strong partnerships within the Westmead Health Precinct. Equipped with advanced technologies such as gene and cell therapies, bioinformatics, regenerative medicine and genomics, WIMR’s technical workforce underpins the institute’s leadership in precision medicine and its continued ability to deliver high‑impact, globally relevant research outcomes.

“Technicians are essential to the success of medical research. At WIMR, the expertise of staff such as our Research Assistants, Research Coordinators, and Scientific Platforms Specialists underpins the advanced technologies and collaborative research that drive discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic. By signing the Technician Commitment, we are reaffirming our commitment to recognising the essential contributions of our technical workforce and ensuring they have the visibility, career development opportunities and support needed to thrive. This commitment will guide our efforts to strengthen technical career pathways and invest in the skills and leadership that will sustain world-class research and positive culture at WIMR into the future.” – Simon Hall, Chief Operating Officer, WIMR.

The Technician Commitment is a pledge to implement a long-term action plan to enhance technical careers, opportunities and skills within the organisation.

“We warmly welcome The Westmead Institute for Medical Research to the Technician Commitment community. The increased interest we’ve had from the international community is testament to the positive changes the Technician Commitment has had on shaping the technical workforce in higher education and research.” – Technician Commitment Programme Director Kelly Vere MBE

“We look forward to supporting The Westmead Institute for Medical Research journey in enhancing the visibility and career development of their technical workforce and sharing valuable insights across our growing community.”

Since launching in 2017, it has now grown to a global community of more than 140 organisations championing technicians and their contributions to higher education and research. The initiative is hosted by the UK Institute of Technical Skills & Strategy.

The Technician Commitment community has welcomed nine international signatories and two international supporters since 2022. The growing global community creates valuable opportunities to share expertise, good practice and experiences from institutions overseas.
