Led by Professor Jon Iredell, the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology (CIDM) is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the pathobiology, ecology, evolution, and transmission of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. With a focus on epidemiology, prevention, and management, CIDM’s research aims to reduce the significant health and socio-economic impact of infectious diseases. Key areas of research include antimicrobial resistance, high-risk bacterial and fungal infections, novel diagnostics and therapeutics, and the sociocultural aspects of infection control. The Centre leverages strong collaborations within the Westmead Hub, links to state and national antimicrobial resistance surveillance programs, and international partnerships, such as the International Phage Directory and global biobanks. Looking ahead, CIDM plans to establish advanced diagnostic and research centers, grow microbial biobanking efforts, and expand a global network in medical mycology.
Our research focus
- Antimicrobial resistance – mechanisms, control and antimicrobial stewardship – and severe infections
- High-risk, high impact bacterial and fungal infections in hospitals and the community, including biothreat pathogens
- Novel diagnostics
- Novel therapeutics
- Sociocultural and ethical factors in infection prevention and control
