The Ludwig Engel Centre for Respiratory Research

The Ludwig Engel Centre for Respiratory Research (LECRR) at WIMR, in collaboration with Westmead Hospital Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, conducts research into a wide variety of respiratory and sleep disorders. LECRR has a fully equipped sleep laboratory capable of performing overnight sleep and circadian rhythm studies, and well-established collaborations with WIMR’s Centre for Cancer Research and WIMR’s Centre for Virus Research.

Our research focus

  • Upper airway physiology in obstructive sleep apnoea;
  • Interactions between sleep, cancer, and circadian rhythms;
  • Pulmonary gas exchange consequences of lung diseases;
  • Virology of chronic obstructive lower airways diseases.

Recent achievements

  • Novel measurement for quantifying gas exchange in respiratory disease developed in collaboration with University of California, San Diego, USA
  • Described persistence of poor sleep in post treatment cancer patients for up to 3 years after treatment
  • Establishment of a longitudinal cohort of patients with, and at risk of, chronic obstructive lower airways diseases to study airway biology and the role of respiratory viruses
