Biography

Nicole Carnt is an Associate Professor and an internationally recognized researcher in the field of corneal and external eye disease, with a particular focus on keratitis. She has published extensively on various aspects of keratitis, including:

Acanthamoeba keratitis:

  • Epidemiology: Risk factors associated with contact lens wear, environmental sources of Acanthamoeba, prevalence and seasonal variation.
  • Diagnosis: Development of non-invasive diagnostic techniques, including autofluorescence imaging.
  • Treatment: Evaluation of new and existing treatment options.
  • Quality of life impact on patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Bacterial keratitis:

  • Global practice patterns in the management of bacterial keratitis.
  • Tear metabolites associated with bacterial keratitis.
  • Role of specific genes in susceptibility to severe complications.

Other areas of research:

  • Contact lens-related complications, including corneal staining and discomfort.
  • Limbal stem cell deficiency.
  • Ocular surface inflammation and the role of various cytokines.
  • Tear film composition and function.
