Biography
A/Professor Ross Laybutt leads the Beta Cell Stress Group in the Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Endocrinology at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. He received his PhD degree from the University of New South Wales and completed a postgraduate fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School followed by an appointment as Head of the Islet Biology Laboratory at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. His research investigates the mechanisms of beta cell stress and survival in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. His work has identified roles of endoplasmic reticulum stress and beta cell dedifferentiation in diabetes.
