Biography

Dr Ushasree Pattamatta has over ten years of dedicated experience in ocular cell biology. Her research is deeply rooted in personal motivation, inspired by her father’s battle with glaucoma. Dr Pattamatta has significantly contributed to the understanding of neurodegeneration in glaucoma and ocular wound healing through the development of innovative animal and organotypic retinal explant models. She has played an important role in advancing ophthalmic drug delivery systems, particularly the use of irbesartan for retinal neuroprotection.

Dr Pattamatta has led preclinical studies exploring the mechanisms of retinal ganglion cell survival and has helped develop new treatment approaches for glaucoma using both in vivo and ex vivo models. She has also collaborated extensively across research groups to translate her expertise into corneal and lens-related pathologies. A passionate mentor, she has supervised multiple PhD and MD students, delivered lectures for postgraduate ophthalmology programs, and contributed to scientific publishing as a reviewer and editorial board member. Her recent work has been supported by grants from Glaucoma Australia and UNSW, with publications in high-impact journals and presentations at international forums. Dr Pattamatta continues to lead translational research in glaucoma bridging cell biology and clinical ophthalmology to combat vision loss

Additional information

Dr.Pattamatta’s research interests lie in elucidating the cellular mechanisms underlying glaucoma pathogenesis. Dr.Pattamatta’s  main research focus is on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival and strategies for neuroprotection, investigating the role of mitochondrial function in RGC health, examining retinal cell cross-talk that influences RGC survival and exploring the mechanisms of fibrosis following glaucoma filtration surgery.
